The It Girl Writes

When Officially Off Duty, every girl needs that special something, a book. And now the ultimate It girl has brought one to the table. Unfortunately however, 'It' is only fit for the coffee table.

Alexa Chung has finally graced the world with her fashion insights, and after making my pilgrimage through rain and sleet to the Kingdom of Waterstones, I was amazed by the magnificence that laid in my hands. The pastel pink, canvas covered hardback whispers a promise of perfection to every Chung follower with a fashion faux pas in their past. The beautifully bound book with its pages full of exotic and wondrous images is exactly the unique and elegant style expected from Chung.

However, once I began to read the novel I was hit abruptly with a sense of worry. The poor grammar, clumsy syntax and severe lack of text on each page made me start to think that perhaps I had been fooled into buying a publicity book. I later found out that the book consists of essays, 'written as emails to [her] editor'. Although this may thrill some Alexa Chung fans as they long to have her spontaneous frivolity, I however, felt it clear from the disjointed, clumsy structure of the book that very little thought and effort had been put in past the front cover.

Chung even admits, herself, that she, 'was heartbroken and didn't know what to do', so decided to throw herself into a project. Chung's relationship with Alex Turner, front man of Arctic Monkeys, has always fascinated me as I have an undying idolisation for both. However, if you are expecting an in-depth, soul destroying chapter on heartbreak, you will be sorely disappointed. Chung wistfully mentions her heartbreak, but this is quickly put to one side as she continues on with stories of Karl Lagerfeld and 'front row politics'.

Once finished, I was left feeling hollow. The fashion genius I expected to be on completion of the book was nowhere to be found, and my opinion of Chung had become somewhat stunted. I left the book for a few days, then thought I must be able to salvage something from my £17 well wasted. This is when I discovered that although the writing is clichéd and simplistic, the book itself is beautiful. It is one of the few books that I will pick up with pleasure, simply to feel its sleek elegance and to indulge in the mesmerising images within.
